Leadership Rockford-Part 2
Add comment February 10th, 2009
Earlier, I commented about how it would be good to develop our local talent instead of always going outside the region for top community jobs…see it here…Leadership Rockford
On tonight’s TV news it was disclosed that a candidate for Rockford’s top school job included the Super from Winnebago. Now, I don’t know him from Adam, but the thought occurred to me: We have a Regional School System that includes many of our local school systems, including Boone, Winnebago and other collar counties.
So…what if my example of “management development of local leaders” were to be implemented with the Regional Schools? They could assign sub-leaders from say, North Boone to say, Winnebago and in the process, begin to develop local talent for the next big Super job. Why should each school district act on its own?
It would seem natural to me that this type of program could be beneficial for all. Of course, performance in one’s current position would be a requirement.
I’ve been a part of this type of program in my earlier industrial career when I worked for larger companies. It can be an effective tool and probably one that will require “thinking outside the box”.
I think its something we need in our “bag of tricks” when recruiting those young ones that we want to retain in the area. Plus provide incentive for the top performers to stay in the area instead of moving out.
What do you think? Could it applied to other community organizations?
