President Obama to headline Lincoln Bicentennial event
Congressman Don Manzullo (R-Egan) will perform a reading of the Gettysburg Address tomorrow morning in front of our nation’s leaders during the official Congressional Tribute to the Lincoln Bicentennial in the U.S. Capitol.
Manzullo will be one of 12 participants – including President Obama – who will help celebrate the 200th Birthday of Abraham Lincoln during the official national ceremony in Washington, D.C. The celebration will begin at 11:30 a.m. ET in The Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. It will likely be carried live by CSPAN and other national news networks.
Representing the Land of Lincoln, Manzullo and Rep. Jesse Jackson (D-IL) will share in the honor of reading Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address during the ceremony. In addition to the President, other participants include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader John Boehner, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senators Dick Durbin and Jim Bunning, Presidential historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin, Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission Co-Chair Harold Holzer, and former Lincoln Presidential Library Executive Director Richard Norton Smith.
Manzullo authored a resolution that passed the U.S. House last year calling on all Americans to remember Abraham Lincoln on his 200th Birthday – Feb. 12, 2009 – and recognize his accomplishments in saving our great nation.
“Abraham Lincoln’s profound and courageous belief in the equality of men and the sacredness of the American Union propelled him forward as one of the greatest Presidents our nation has ever known,” Manzullo said. “President Lincoln epitomized public service, and I have always tried to hold myself to his standards and integrity in doing the business of the people. It is an incredible honor for me to participate in his 200th Birthday Celebration.”
