Although many still debate whether global warming is really a problem - this article is not for the purpose of taking either side in that debate. More and more companies are coming to the realization that sustainability is all about saving money. However, the Next Generation Manufacturing survey results indicate that not enough companies have yet come to this conclusion. Nationally only 16% of respondents rank green/sustainability as highly important to their success over the next five years. Surprisingly, another 16% said it was not at all important. In the meantime, there is increasing government regulation, growing consumer demand, and new requirements from large downstream manufacturers in their supply chains that will drive companies to make change in this area.. Companies that have started down the path of “going green” have realized substantial savings. Even doing some simple things like replacing your inefficient lighting, repairing leaks in your hydraulic fluid systems or your compressed air systems, and finding ways to reduce water use can have positive impact. This is a great opportunity to create competitive differentiation and also identify some projects that can add green to your bottom line.
