Get your communication buzzing

Buzz words do more for your writing than keeping it out of a spam or trash folder. They can help humanize your message by adding excitement about your product, organization or event. Be aware of buzz words that are commonly used by the media you want to pitch to. Try to make use of buzz words without being blatantly biased towards your organization. “Unique” should be used only when the topic being described truly is unique. Buzz words should also be relevant to the region you are pitching to so it fits within the local culture and value system. Topics dealing with healthcare and the environment have many buzz words to choose from. When was the last time you read a newspaper without seeing “Green” in a headline? David Armon, President of PR Newswire, stated in an International Herald Tribune article that use of the word “toxic” in news releases has increased by 5 percent in 2008. This also brings up an issue to note; be aware of cliché and over-used buzz words.
