Find Contacts in Unlikely Places

This past week we attended a seminar given by PR Newswire on working with freelance TV producers. The seminar was presented in an informal fashion, with a panel of a few freelance producers answering questions for the group.
One of most interesting pieces of information we took from the seminar was how these producers find their subjects for on-air talent for the shows they produce. One woman that produces shows for Animal Planet and HGTV and other cable networks said she posts open calls on Craig’s List! Who knew?
So how else do they find subjects? They look in the news of course. If CNN is using a great source, they might use him too. Or if USA Today quoted an expert in the field their show falls in, they might call that person.
The producers also mentioned they scour the blog community to find quirky writers that are in-the-know and have a good following. So if you happen to be an expert in something (whether it be a business-related subject like finance, or something totally off-the-wall like teapot collecting) get out there and blog about it! You never know who might come calling.
