Report confirms we’re getting fatter

Illinois ranked as America’s 23rd-fattest state with 27.7 percent of the state’s adults ranked as obese (defined as having a body mass index of 30 or more), according to an annual report issued today by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The report is based on information gathered in 2010.

Illinois ranked 27th in the 2010 and 2009 reports with adult obesity rates of 25.9 and 26 percent.

Illinois state fared better than all but one of its surrounding states — Wisconsin ranked 25th with a 27.4 percent obesity rate, but Indiana was 15th with 29.1 percent, Iowa 20th with 28.1 percent, Michigan 10th with 30.5 percent, Missouri 11th with 30.3 percent and Kentucky 6th with 31.5 percent.

In all, Colorado ranked as having the lowest percentage of obese adults at 19.8 percent, but the report said that same figure would have been the highest percentage for any state in 1995.

The report, “F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2011″ also lists information in 33 other health-related areas, including such things as rates for diabetes, hypertension, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, infant mortality, and doctor and nurse shortages at www.healthyamericans.org or www.rwjf.org.
