Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

It’s that time of year again

If you’re a big enough film fan to be reading this blog, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t take a shot at the Register Star’s annual “Beat the Movie Man” contest. It’s simple — just go to this link, make your Oscar picks in eight categories, take a guess at the tie-breaker (namely, how long is that ceremony going to last?), fill out a bit of personal info and hit submit. Like I said — simple.

I’ll reveal my own picks on Sunday, Feb. 24 (which happens to be Oscar day), then we’ll reveal the winner on the following Tuesday. I’m not sure what the prize is this year, but last year it was an iPod, and we’re hoping for something at least as good. Either way, if you pick more correct winners than me, you get a certificate commemorating your achievement — and, of course, you can lord it over me here in the comments section.

Good luck!

Should we support the Oscars and all the hoopla when the writers are starving?

Hey Will what year did you start beat the movie man? Was it 2003 or 2004. Because I know you beat me in 04, I believe you got 6 of 8 and I got 5 out of 8 I went for the upset and Natalie Portman for best supporting actress for Closer and Cate Blanchett won for The Aviator. However in 05 I beat you and I never received my certificate for beating you. I remember because I missed best picture and best song like you, but I got best supporting actress right with Rachel Weisz and you picked Michelle Williams for Brokeback Mountain. And last year I did not do it because I forgot to submit my picks in on time. So I have to make sure I do again it this year. Also did you go see There Will Be Blood last weekend?

Sweet: I support the writers, but as a movie fan, I can’t ignore the Oscars.

Adam: The first year of Movie Man was 2005, focusing on the 2004 movies — so the Portman/Blanchett race was that year. Sorry you never got your certificate for 2005, but be sure to enter this year. It was a great year for movies, and you might have a distinct advantage — so far, I’ve seen few of the nominees. Didn’t catch THERE WILL BE BLOOD because it didn’t work out scheduling wise, but I did catch something else — keep an eye out for a later post today.

What if the Register Star was on strike and I said, “well, as a fan of Linda Cunningham’s columns, I’m still going to advertise in and read the Enquirer. I don’t care if it hurts writers like Will.”

Sweet, I think a FAR more important question is, how can someone start a contest and not tell people what the prize will be? I would hope it is at least an autographed picture of the Movie Man.

    Adam
    you can have my certificate.
I tied for first last year and lost on the running time estimate.
The winner got an iPod. I got a certificate!

Sweet: Well, naturally that’d be your right as a reader and/or advertister. As for me, by following the Oscars and writing about them, I don’t see how I’m financially (or spiritually) supporting the studios over the writers. I read some blogs written by striking writers, and even they’re talking about the Oscars. It’s the big story in Hollywood at this time of year, no matter how you look at it.

Hunt: I don’t have anything to do with lining up the prizes, but if it’s an autographed picture of me, I expect a BIG drop off in entries!

Give Adam a prize, Movie Man. You owe him. If you give him his prize, I will support you and your Oscar contest, despite the writer’s strike.

Just reading the Movie Man is prize enough. Do you know how many major metro newspapers would KILL to have Pfeifer on their staffs? And I’m not talking just U.S. papers either.

That’s a great comment coming from a co-worker. But nonetheless true. Movie reviewers, along with editorial cartoonists and anything else that can be bought from syndication, are rapidly disappearing from today’s newspapers. And they wonder why readers are disappearing?

    Sadly, that’s exactly the case.

Movie Man, who decides the prizes, then? What kind of rinky-dink outfit starts a contest and doesn’t tell you what you win?

Even if I don’t win, can I get an autographed pic?

  • 13. Sweet Mo Mentum  |  January 28th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Oooh yes! I would like an autographed pic, too!

  • 14. Hunt is Spent  |  January 29th, 2008 at 9:10 am

Will, any update on the prize?
