Want to see the trailer for the next Indiana Jones film?

Of course you do! So just click here, then come back and tell me what you think.
Here are a few observations after an initial viewing:
1. At first, I was worried they were focusing too much on Indy as an icon, getting overly serious in recapping the previous three films. Then the footage from the new one started and the fun kicked in almost immediately. Nice to see Indy’s seat-of-the-pants style and deadpan sense of humor remains intact.
2. I don’t know if the stuntwork got a CGI boost, but it looks real, and that’s what counts. And that looks like Harrison Ford swinging from the whip, which counts even more.
3. I like how Shia LaBeouf is amazed Indy is, in fact, a teacher. Those scenes of him actually in front of a classroom at the beginning of RAIDERS are a great counterpoint to the craziness that follows.
4. No signs of Karen Allen (playing Marion) that I could see, but plenty of Cate Blanchett as the villain.
5. Did I see the words “Roswell, New Mexico”? – guess we know what that means.
6. I can’t imagine any film fan watching this trailer and not having a smile on his face when it’s over. This sort of thing is the reason I love movies.

Even though Cate Blanchett looks a little too much like Mrs Hogenson from “The Incredibles”, they’ve got my ticket!
p.s.
That was Allen running the spiral and driving the truck at the end of the trailer.

You’re right — good eye! I think casting her in this movie was a smart touch. Marion and Indy made a great couple.

Is it just my conservative side or does it look like the U.S. troops and the Cate Blanchett character filmed to look like Nazis stormtroopers?
See the link.

Agreed. At first, I thought in that scene with Indy swinging on the whip, he was up against Nazis (or at least German soldiers), but apparently they are indeed U.S. troops. Hope that explosion didn’t kill them all!
Blanchett’s character is called “Agent Irina Spalko” according to the imdb. I think she’s supposed to be Russian — which would fit with the Cold War 1950s setting.

This movie will make it into the elite group of films that I’ll actually watch in the theater. My parents sneaked me out of 1st grade class to see the opening of Temple of Doom. Which tells you how old this franchise is…
Also, a couple self-references are funny. I have faith that Spielberg won’t go overboard on it.

Good Lord. Harrison Ford is as old Egypt. I’ve never watched one of these films anyway.

As much as I love Indy I’m a little hesitant on this. I wish they would of just left the franchise alone. Im more stoked for The Dark Knight.

Atlas - Harrison may be ancient but he’s got himself a hottie. And I bet you don’t. You are just jealous. Don’t you think, Movie Man?

Here’s the url of the soldiers.

Greg, I think you and Rand are going to have to sort that one out by yourselves. This is a movie blog, and issues of jealousy and personal relationships are outside its area of expertise.
Chris: Definitely U.S. soldiers — or guys dressed as U.S. soldiers. Hmmm.

I WAS commenting on movies. Not sure why I was attacked by someone I don’t know and was not addressing. I just was trying to point out that the endless number of sequels is tiresome, even if it is with a franchise that everyone loved.
12. Will Pfeifer | February 14th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Point taken, Rand. And I’ve got my worries about this new movie stacking up to the others (especially the first), too. Greg, let’s keep the comments to movies, OK? OK!

Chris,
RE: the top photo in your link
The soldier on the left is certainly an American GI but the soldier on the right seems to have a different color uniform - dark green as opposed to olive drab. Ohmygod! I really DO have too much time on my hands!

Hokum — Too much time on our hands is what this blog is all about. Keep the observations coming!

I think I might have wet my pants a little bit.

Movie - I am duly chastised. I was really in a backwards sort of way commenting on Mr. Ford’s advanced age - i.e., what’s a dude like him doing with a woman 22 years younger AND what the … is he doing taking on the Indy role again after so many years?
It won’t happen again. I promise, Movie. I promise!
17. Will Pfeifer | February 14th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Jay, I know just how you feel.
Greg, sounds good!
18. elDizzle | February 14th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
I love it. I’m ready for another Indy, it’s been a fun ride and I’m sure one more with Harrison Ford at the helm won’t derail the series…. I hope.
19. hokumboy | February 15th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Greg,
As someone who’s a mere 5 years younger than Indy, I’d like to let you children know that just being 65 doesn’t necessarily qualify one for the nursing home. We old guys still get around very well, thank you.
20. Will Pfeifer | February 15th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Hokumboy, you’re right! I’m sure Harrison Ford could still take me in a fight, and you probably could, too.
21. Greg g | February 15th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Movie Man, no way! you are all powerful!
22. Brian M | February 21st, 2008 at 2:18 pm
By the way, Pfifer, Marion IS in the trailer, albeit a VERY quick shot.

This will be an interesting film. They really have a lot of work ahead of them to top Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (notice no mention of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which I haven’t seen, but have heard poor reviews about)).
I’m anxious to see it, and hope that they do a great job. I’m on the fence about the trailer. It could be good, but, really, the trailer represents so little of what the movie will be, and I didn’t like some of what I saw in the trailer.
My expectation is high, especially with the multiple script re-writes, etc. I really have high expectation of this movie, and hope not to be disappointed.
They’ve also released images of the upcoming toy line, and there a re a few (potential) spoilers that can be deduced by viewing those, as well.
We’ll see soon.

You’ve got to hand Steven Spielberg, the script writers and the cast one, though. They took what is generally perceived to be a dull, mundane subject, Archeology, and really made it “cool” and interesting to some who may have never given it a second glance.
Also, these movies are generally fit for family viewing, with small caution on momentary scenes only. I like the fact that I will likely be able to view this movie with my children.
Sorry for rambling on.
