When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Will, you can skip transformers. I'm a big Speed Racer fan, but has anyone else noticed that they're using two versions of the Mach 5. It looks liked they copied the car from the cartoon dead on, but they also have a beefed up version that has a single cockpit. Don't tell me that it transforms into a two seater.

In terms of my childhood, I was all about G.I. Joe and Transformers. Transformers disappointed me both in its lack of faithfulness to the original, and as just a cool "giant robots kicking a**" movie.

I had hoped they wouldn't botch up G.I. Joe, as well, but those hopes were squashed the second they hired Stephen "Van Helsing" Sommers to direct it. Then the picture of Snake Eyes (Ray Park) came out and I was thrilled. But now there's a new picture - Rachel Nichols as Scarlett - and I'm back to disappointment. Looks like they're just gonna dress everyone in black and make it just like every other adaptation these days.

I have a confession to make. I like Transformers. Sure the acting was crap, the lines were cheesy, and it was full of Michael Bay sunset shots and explosions, but I loved it. Maybe it's because I grew up with the cartoon and the toys and I was suckered in with the effects and the music.

I hated PHANTOM MENACE, and I had no interest at all in TRANSFORMERS (still haven't seen it), but for some reason, I'm jazzed about SPEED RACER. Yes, it could be terrible, but something about the combination of my affection for the old cartoon (which this movie seems to capture on some sort of wild, crazy, colorful primal level) and my affection for the first MATRIX movie (which the Wachowskis also did) makes me want to see it. I guess we'll find out soon if it's any good

Brian, I couldn't agree more. Indeed, if it weren't for my nephew, there's no way I'd see this. Your comparison to the pod chase in PHANTOM MENACE sums it up well. That movie -- and that sequence -- were tedious to sit through. It's like eating pure frosting with no cake under it. My comments seemed complimentary, but only because my expectations were so low the trailer ended up looking better than expected.

I think you could walk in to this one with the lowest of expectations and come away pleasantly surprised. It looks like it could be a lot of fun and I agree that the casting of Christina Ricci is spot on.

Send: BJ and the Bear, the Hulk, Speed Racer...the things you learn about on this blog are incredible. And useless. But incredible nonetheless. So keep your negativity to a minimum, K? There is enough of that to go around over at the Sweenster's blog.
