 So what do you think? Strong cast, lots of action, pretty decent computer effects. One thing they don’t show is the reported cameo by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (aka Iron Man’s alter ego). That short scene hints that Marvel wants to create a shared universe in its movies just like in its comic books. Maybe that’ll pave the way for the long-rumored AVENGERS film one of these years.
It’s a great time to be a comic book geek, isn’t it?

I have a question - during the previews before Baby Mama, we saw the trailer for The Strangers with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. I’m not usually spooked by trailers, but this one is like a mini-movie. It’s the only trailer I’ve seen that had the whole audience screaming - in a trailer - unbelievably scary! Especially the wide angle shot of the 70’s style living room where Liv Tyler is unknowingly being watched by a masked man – those words CANNOT convey how unnerving this scene was! I mean, I had nightmares!
What do you know about The Strangers? It didn’t seem like a straight horror film, maybe more like Hard Candy? Have you heard anything?

Marvel is very much intentionally creating a shared universe. Now that they are starting to make their own films and just having studios distribute them, they have full control rather than having to try to do the impossible and get multiple studios to cooperate for use of their licensed properties (X-men/F4 were Fox, Spidey @ Columbia, Hulk was Universal, etc). As for Avengers, Marvel has said they would like each character to be established in their own movie first, so before Avengers happens, they’ll be doing Thor (Matthew Vaughn currently attached), Ant-Man (Edgar Wright attached), and of course Captain America.
And for further evidence they are moving towards Avengers, stay past the end credits of Iron Man - there’s a scene with Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, and he wants to talk to Stark about the “Avengers Initiative”.

Anne — From what I can tell, it’s more suspenseful than out-and-out gory horror, but it seems like it might be in the vein of FUNNY GAMES, minus the postmodern shenanigans of that movie. Looks intriguing, though. There’s something really exciting about a movie that manages to be genuinely scary.
Brian — I’d really like to see this plan play out over several years (and several movies). And Simon Pegg as Ant Man is a bit of genius casting!
Sam Jackson as Nick Fury is perfect, of course, because that’s who Bryan Hitch drew him as in Marve’s new take on the Avengers, THE ULTIMATES.

They’ve changed the main players with this one, but they’re making all the same mistakes.
The all CG Hulk concept is horrible. It was a mistake with the first film and it continues to be a glaring mistake apparently. How did the filmmakers not see this problem? It’s so unconvincing that you might as well be rendering him in 2D with hand drawn cell animation.
They should have taken a page from the Iron Man playbook and used as much practical FX as possible. It not only looks better, it suspends the disbelief of the audience . Then they could blend it with some occasional CG to really sell it.
And sell it they’ll need too because with an only CG Hulk I’m just not buying it, or a ticket.
