Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

After 19 years, Indiana Jones returns to movie screens at midnight. If you see it, swing by this post and share your thoughts.

And please, if you’re posting any spoilers, warn us ahead of time, OK? Thanks!

    1 star

Spoiler alerts: The worst Speilberg film ever. This was a raping of the original films, a real embarrassment for all involved. There was a quick sand scene, for crying out loud! And I don’t know of any refrigerators that are lead lined and ever if they were, there’s no way you could survive the temperatures of a nuke blast.

I knew I was in for a lame film when the famous Paramount mountain logo dissolved into a mole hill. Thank you George Lucas for tip off that I shouldn’t take this movie seriously– not in the least. All characters, including Indy, are one dimensional heartless automatons that plow through one of the worst screen plays in recent memory.

I really think that computers are making movies too easy to make. And the CGI jockeys out there are just yes-men morons that whip up the lamest crap that George Lucas can dream up.

The one shining star in the flic, was the WWII back story of Indy (or I should say Colonel Jones) in the OSS. That sounded like a gold mine for more movies, which is the only direction this franchise can look– towards the past.

BTW-I dressed in full Indiana Jones regalia for the midnight showing at the Elgin Ultra Screen theater. While I was slightly embarrassed to walk into a packed theater wearing a fedora and leather jacket, it didn’t compare to the walk of shame I endured walking to my car after this crappy movie. I felt embarrassed or Harrison Ford and the wonderful character he brought to life almost 30 years ago.

    SPOILER-FREE:

It’s near impossible to truly review the film or explain my opinions without going heavy into spoilers, so I’ll try to just just give general impressions:

Truly disappointing. Easily the worst of the Indy flicks, but to be fair, those are high marks to try to live up to. They’ve really lost the Indiana Jones feel here, due largely to changing the era and even the genre in which our characters live.

There are some fun moments, but only moments. We get glimpses of the Indiana Jones we know and love, but they are few and far between. Mostly, the audience all sat there with that sinking feeling, hoping in vain that it would get better. But by the time they reach the climax (which, like the whole basic concept of this script is a disaster), you realize its all a downward spiral. Several parts go beyond any suspension of disbelief, and I’m not even talking about just the supernatural stuff.

You know how National Treasure and The Mummy felt like cheap knockoffs of Indiana Jones? Well this movie feels more akin to those flicks than the Indy flicks (complete with scenes copied straight out of those two films).

All in all, not a horrible film, but one that I’m not sure deserves to be in the company of its predecessors.

p.s. The Shia LaBeouf question: I thought he was one of the better parts of the film, to the point where I actually found myself enjoying him more than Ford at some points. (also, check out the teaser that hit today for his next flick, Eagle Eye - it looks really good!)

Oof! Sorry to hear that, guys, but thanks for your timely, in-the-middle-of-the-night postings!

I completely agree with what Brian said. There are some moments but that is about it. It’s like the Star Wars prequels too much CGI not enough story. It’s too hard to recapture the magic after 19 years. They should not of even bothered with this one. Really disappointing, but at least we have The Dark Knight in less than two months. And Brian you are right Eagle Eye does look pretty cool.

I actually need to amend my earlier remarks:

I saw it a second time today, and I actually found myself enjoying it much more. Knowing what to expect, I was able to prepare myself for some of the sillier part and mis-steps, and fully enjoy the rest of the film.

I would still put it last on the list of Indy films, and it still has its flaws, but I think I was too harsh on it at first. I enjoyed more of it than I didn’t. The last 1/4 of the movie still feels like a National Treasure flick, and I still have problems with the ending, but overall I can now say I had fun. I’m glad I gave it a second chance to fully develop my opinion on it.

I don’t know if i even want to see again a second time on the big screen. Maybe when it comes out on DVD, I’ll give it another chance. All I could think about when I left is how much better Iron Man was, and why didn’t I see that again instead.
