Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Today, the Onion’s AV Club presents a list of great single-scene performances, ranging from Ned Beatty’s “You have tampered with the primal forces of nature!” speech in NETWORK to Chris Rock trying to order “one rib” in I’M GONNA GIT YOU SUCKA.

This being the age of You Tube, there are clips a-plenty to accompany the picks, but be warned: the language can get a little salty — especially in the first (and greatest) scene, Alec Baldwin’s unforgettable motivational speech in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS.

Now that’s how you steal a movie.

As much as I love I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, the problem I have with any praise heaped on Chris Rock’s rib scene is the fact that he’d already done that SAME bit for YEARS in his stand-up, then again on SNL. Way to recycle your own material!! Next thing you know they’l be including Mike Myers and all the stuff he reuses over and over in everything he’s ever done.

Dennis Hopper, True Romance. I think you know the scene.

I do know the scene — and it comes up a lot in the comments field of the Onion list. It really is a great scene (for those who don’t know what we’re talking about, it’s the one with Christopher Walken and Hopper discussing Sicilian history). It’s probably, in fact, the best scene in the movie — and it’s just two guys talking.

Another scene that gets mentioned a lot is Alfred Molina as the crazy coke dealer at the end of BOOGIE NIGHTS. It’s so good it makes the song “Sister Christian” by Knight Ranger sound compelling.
