Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Yikes!

I had already decided that Disaster Movie had a lock on worst film of the year. I mean, Epic Movie, Date Movie, and Meet the Spartans are 3 of the all-time worst, and judging from the trailer for Disaster, the “writers” were so intent on spoofing the newest, freshest movies that this time they didn’t even wait for the movies to come out - they made this one based solely on the TRAILERS for this summer’s big flicks.

But having seen the trailer for Meet Dave, there’s going to be strong competition for that bottom spot this year. Could Eddie Murphy actually out-do himself and displace Norbit as the worst movie in his career??

My theory: Eddie Murphy died years ago, along with Steve Martin and Bill Murray, and they were replaced with unfunny dopplegangers who make crap films.

Although Murray may still suprise us on occasion I have to agree with you on Murphy and Martin. Throw Robin Williams into that batch too. And, it seems, Jack Black is already working on joining them in that humorless limbo of comedic superstars.

I can’t go with you on Bill Murray — movies like RUSHMORE, LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU and LOST IN TRANSLATION are some of the most interesting of his career, but you’re dead on with Murphy and Martin. Strangely, the last movie either was funny in was Martin’s BOWFINGER. I just read Steve Martin’s auto bio of his stand-up comedy days, BORN STANDING UP, and I kept wondering why he doesn’t put some of that wit and humanity into his movies. Now there’s a PINK PANTHER sequel coming out — Gah!

Steve Martin is a pompous jerk, my guess is no good director wants to work with him these days. The last movie I liked him in was The Spanish Prisoner. It’s not even close to a comedy, although I do find Mamet’s dialogue rather humorous. Dog my cats indeed.

THE SPANISH PRISONER is a great movie — one of the best of recent years, in my opinion. And Martin is surprisingly good as a deadly serious, vaguely threatening character. I’d like to see him try more roles like this.
