Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Friday afternoon videos: The WATCHMEN trailer

Debuting before THE DARK KNIGHT, here’s the trailer for the eagerly awaited (at least by me) film adaptation of arguably the greatest super-hero comic book ever created, WATCHMEN. Fans of the comic, which arrived way back in 1986, will be able to spot just about every moment in the trailer and know how it fits into the grand scheme — director Zach Snyder is obviously being very, very faithful to the original work. I still have no idea how they’ll fit all that plot (plus the flashbacks, flash forwards, digressions and other bits of business) into a single movie’s running time, but I’m tentatively hopeful.

Anyway, in case you haven’t seen it yet, here it is …

I’d be curious to hear reaction from people who’ve read the comic book and people who have no idea who these characters are. Does it look intriguing to you?

I’d always heard of Watchmen, but never read it. And once I heard they were finally making the movie, I decided I wouldn’t read it before I saw the film, so I could be fully surprised by everything.

Then I saw the still photos, and thought, “wow, those just look… silly.”

Now I see the trailer, and I just think, “wow, that looks… silly and horrible.” Zack Snyder’s got a beautiful eye for filming, but the characters and all look pretty lame.

Having said that, I will see this with an open mind. I fully admit that not knowing the original source material, I cannot make an informed judgment. And it must have a helluva story to earn its almost universal acclaim. But WB better work on their marketing, because to outsiders like me, that trailer itself is not gonna change any minds.

…and just in case there’s not a separate post for Dark Knight reactions, I offer a few thoughts on the midnight experience:

So last night I headed to the theater, waited for two hours, and took in a packed midnight premiere screening of The Dark Knight. Why rush out? Movies like this are simply best seen with an opening night crowd. Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits said it best:

“Times like these are what summer blockbuster fun is all about, and all those of you who (like us) grew up standing in lines with friends to see great summer movies know how important and cherished the tradition is. It’s funny… TIME posted a story yesterday pondering why anyone would want to attend an early morning movie showing like this, and it’s clear from the tone of the piece that the author doesn’t get it. WE, on the other hand (and I mean the collective ‘we’ naturally), know that a movie like this is BEST seen with an enthusiastic audience of people who are going to laugh, cheer and gasp at all the right moments, and who will get all the insider references. You see… a true blockbuster connoisseur relishes the kind of collective ‘energy in the room’ that only an absolutely dedicated audience can provide. And no audience is more dedicated than one that turns out in the wee early hours of the morning for a film, often in costume and with reinforcements.”

And there was definitely energy in the room. And, of course, more than a few Jokers. There were a couple good Jokers, and there were bad Jokers…There were young Jokers, old Jokers, female Jokers, asian Jokers, too-fat Jokers, WAY too fat Jokers… you get the point. I applaud their enthusiasm, but maybe try for a little originality next time? I dread this Halloween, when every third costume I see is someone who slapped on some makeup as the Joker, somehow thinking it would be an original idea.

The film itself? Well, head on over to my Flixster page, where you can read my most recent reviews including Dark Knight, Mamma Mia!, and a few smaller films.

WOW, does that trailer look good. It looks just like the comic…

    One word: trepidation.

As someone who read Watchmen when it came out in issue form, I’ve always been in the camp that thought it unfilmmable as a two-hour Hollywood movie. (I favored the 6 or 12 hour HBO miniseries idea.)

BTW, is it just me or do the actors on the cover of the new EW look like a bunch of guys who dressed up as the characters for Comic Con?
