Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

He’s back. Who cares?

Here, in case you’re curious, is the poster for the upcoming remake of FRIDAY THE 13TH. As you can see, they spent a lot of time writing the copy…

I suppose the producers saw all the money those SAW movies make every year and said “Heck, how much could a new hockey mask and machete cost? We could make a fortune.” Personally, I couldn’t care less about a new FRIDAY THE 13TH movie (or, in all likelihood, series), but never underestimate the desire for teenagers to see kids their age get killed in imaginative and interesting ways. I can’t explain it, but I don’t dispute it.

Anyone interested in another round with Jason?

I was around for the first batch of all the Freddie and Jason movies. I only caught one of them (I forgot which). Not my cup of tea. I love horror, but find slasher movies just mindless trash. So I\’ll definitely be passing up on any remakes.

Put me down as not interested.

I haven’t even watched any of the Saw movies, although I plan to check out the first one or two someday. The last horror movie I really liked was The Descent and I do have the Ruins on the way from Netflix…

I’m still waiting for a great horror movie. I have a hard time thinking of one that was more than above average in the last 10 years. The problem is these days Hollywood only seems to make 3 kinds of horror film:
    1) “Torture Porn”, as it’s been called: Hostel, Saw, etc. Find new and cringe-inducing ways to torture and kill people isn’t scary, it’s just lame.

    2) Remakes of Asian Flicks: Personally, I don’t even think the originals are very good. The Grudge, The Ring, The Eye, Dark Water, Pulse, etc… Every film is the same. Nothing but creepy imagery and a plot about revenge from the grave for some heinous event from the past. And when the originals aren’t good, you can bet the remakes aren’t much better, especially since they usually combine it with Category 3:

    3) The PG-13 Cash-Grab: Anytime a studio’s main concern in making a movie is the rating, that’s never a good sign. Water it down so the teenagers can get in and BAM! another $50 Million. Who cares about quality?

I thought The Strangers had a shot at finally giving us a good scary movie, but what started out well quickly devolved into nothing but a long, repetitive series of “jump”-scares. So disappointing. So, here I am, still waiting for a good horror film. (and F/13th surely won’t be it)

p.s. - LD: The Ruins was actually not bad. It’s not your typical gorefest horror film. It’s a slow-burning, growing-tension kind of film, and I actually enjoyed it (though the ending is a bit sudden and kind of a let-down)
