Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Mike Myers? Really?

I was excited by the prospect of Quentin Tarantino doing a modern take on the World War II movie with his new version of INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, but now I can feel that excitement starting to wane. First, Eli Roth (bad director, worse actor, decent horror fan) has joined the cast, and now Variety announces  that Mike Myers — yes, the man behind THE LOVE GURU – will have a role as well.

I know Myers considers himself the latter-day version of Peter Sellers, but he’s dreaming. (Though, by many accounts, both of them were notoriously difficult to work with.) Maybe he’ll use the same lame accent as that annoying Simon character he did on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.

Still, the guy has — or at least had — talent. WAYNE’S WORLD was a sharp comedy, and some of his bits on SNL were funny (until he inevitably beat them into the ground). Maybe this is the sort of change of pace he needs. To give Myers his credit, he wasn’t bad in the disco drama 54, and if the movie had focused on his character instead of the idiot busboy played by Ryan Phillippe, it would’ve been a much better movie.

Peter Sellers, Mike Myers definitely is not………….

I think Mike Myer’s comedies as of late, to include the Austin Powers sequels, were pretty bad. I won’t see The Love Guru, so, I can’t judge that one fairly. The last good comedy he made, in my opinion, was So I Married An Axe Murderer. He needs to get away from “character” comedies, and return to making the smarter comedies.

Quentin Tarrantino’s “Genius” is lost on me anyway. Resovior (spelling?) Dogs and Pulp Fiction were good movies, and, even Jackie Brown was tolerable. But, he’s nothing fresh anymore, with respect to my taste.

I only saw the first Hostel movie, so, I can’t speak for number 2, but it was really nothing but shock value, really. I watched it, and was somewhat entertained, but still, not a lot of substance, in my opinion.

I think that their new movie is off to a less than promising start.
