Here’s a video look at Guy Maddin’s wonderfully strange bit of surreal black-and-white autobiography, BRAND UPON THE BRAIN! Maybe it’s not for everyone, but it’s great stuff nevertheless…

I can\’t wait to see this. I confess I didn\’t watch most of your video because I didn\’t want any of the movie spoiled. You introduced me to his movies a couple or so years ago and I\’ve been hooked since. Like you said, he\’s a great tonic after all the mindless mainstream blockbuster junk foisted on us.

If you like his other movies, John, I think you’ll really like this one. And thanks for leaving this comment — like I said, Guy Maddin doesn’t appeal to most people, so it’s great to hear from someone who is a fan.

His film version of DRACULA is one of the most poetic films I ever saw. I liked how it twisted the story we’ve seen over and over and made Van Helsing look like a fanatic nutjob.

It really looks intriguing, and Criterion does SUCH a nice job with their DVDs. Did you ever watch MY WINNEPEG, and, if so, what did you think of it?
