Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Friday Morning Movies: Major Kong’s checklist

August 22nd, 2008 at 09:32am Will Pfeifer

Here’s a short-but-classic bit from DR. STRANGELOVE (OR, HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB). As the  B-52 bomber “The Leper Colony” prepares to attack the Soviet Union, its commander, Major Kong (Slim Pickens) goes over the contents of the Army-issue survival kit. As he says, “Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff!”

Originally, he said “a pretty good weekend in Dallas,” but DR. STRANGELOVE was released in 1964, and with the Kennedy assassination still fresh in everyone’s minds, the line was changed.

One of my favorite movies and Stanley Kubrick’s best movie. It’s fast paced, smartly edited and well written. Kubrick’s work tends to lumber, whereas Dr. Strangelove flows beautifully. Didn’t Kubrick get thrown off this film, or an I thinking of Paths to Glory?

I’m not aware of Kubrick being thrown off any movies. You might be thinking of the fact that Kirk Douglas suggested Kubrick (his Paths to Glory director) to take over on his next film, Spartacus, after original director Anthony Mann was thrown off.

DR. STRANGELOVE is my favorite comedy of all time and one of my favorite movies of any genre.

I thought I read that Slim Pickens wasn’t told it was a comedy and played his role as if it was a serious part. Which makes it all the funnier.
