Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Oh boy, Will…. I think you still missed The Wire’s main focus. It’s not really the drug war. You need to go back and watch from Season 1 and then re-watch Season 5. It’s not about drugs, it’s not about politicians, or cops, or dealers. It’s not about the docks, or the schools, or the paper…. it’s about the city.

No, I realize that the focus is the whole city of Baltimore, and how all the various aspects of the city affect each other, but I still think the drug war is the prism through which the series views the city. I’m going to watch the other seasons, though LD — definitely. In fact, I’m working my way through 1 right now.

Glad to hear it! After watching all the seasons, you can’t help but be moved by episode 9 in the final season. To me that episode summed up what the entire series was about.

Will, I’m glad to see you’re getting on the Wire train, but it is unfortunate that you watched season 5 first, rather than watching them in order. With your tastes, though, I can guarantee that you’ll be blown away by the whole series.

Also, I think you’re dead on in your comparison of The Wire to a novel rather than a conventional tv series, especially as David Simon employed some great crime novelists as writers on the series.
