Don LaFontaine, RIP

You might not know the name, but you definitely know the voice. Don LaFontaine was the guy famous for providing the narration in hundreds of movie trailers. His deep vocal talents made “In a world…” a modern Hollywood cliche, and trailers will be a bit less awesome now that he’s no longer with us. He died Monday at the age of 68.
Here’s a short (about 5 minutes) video bio of LaFontaine, narrated — appropriately enough — by the man himself. He sounds, in every sense of the word, like a great guy.

I\’m sure most people recognize the voice, but one of the news shows last night (NBC, I think) also showed part of that commercial for some insurance where the person told the story and he read it like he would a promo for the movie. So more people have probably seen–if not recognized–him than you think. I remember seeing that commercial, but I still had no idea who he was. Nice clip from YouTube.

you’re referring to the Geico commercial:
This is like Stan Winston’s passing earlier this year - most of the mainstream moviegoing public will never even know or appreciate him. As a guy who loves watching trailers almost as much as movies, I’m sad to hear of his passing. He was a guy who found his niche and revelled in it. What a career! We’ll miss you, Don!

p.s. Do you think he’ll be included in the annual Oscar memoriam montage? He certainly should be.
