Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

And now,  the video version of this week’s review, COOL HAND LUKE …

(Be sure to stick around for the end, where I do my uncanny imitation of Strother Martin.)

I LOVE this movie, and I’m so glad it’s now out on DVD. I used to teach it when I was teaching at Guilford several years ago, and I had a student whom I saw again some 20 years after I’d had him in class. He said he was just talking about me with his wife. I expressed my doubts as to that, and he said he was watching it on TV with his wife not long before, and at the end, he said of the crossroads scene, “See, that shows he’s a Christ figure.” And she replied, “That’s that crazy English teacher of yours again, isn’t it.” I just love to tell that story to classes when I’m teaching literature. So many things are operating in that film—especially the music. Great, great film. And great Strother Martin impression, by the way.

You are kind of like a stick figure in this review and then you break out that imitation and suddenly you come to life! That was worth the wait! And I have a feeling you could eat 50 eggs yourself!

By the way, did you know Paul Newman actually ate 50 eggs for that scene? Now THAT’S Method acting!

It’s a good movie, but it seems very stagy to me like it’s an adaptation of a play. It hasn’t aged as well for me.

Oh, and great Strother Martin impression at the end. Brew is right. We need to see that side of Will Pfeifer more.

John — I remember when my English teacher (more than 20 years ago) pointed out the Christ symbolism in OLD MAN AND THE SEA (the book) with Santiago having an oar across his shoulders. I’d never heard of such a thing!

There’s actually some debate as to how many eggs Paul really ate. Paul isn’t present in the DVD documentary to tell us, but estimates from other cast members vary. None of them are near 50, which is too bad.
