Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

AMERICAN PSYCHO …. the musical?

According to a press release received by the fine folks at Cinematical, the 2000 movie (and Bret Easton Ellis novel) could be headed to Broadway. As they report, “The Johnson-Roessler Company, The Collective and XYZ Films have partnered to acquire, develop and produce the live stage version.”

I enjoyed Mary Harron’s movie and Ellis’ original novel (They’re both comedies, believe it or not, though Ellis’ book is considerably darker and more detailed in its descriptions of the murders.)  and think this is the sort of over-the-top tale that could succeed on Broadway, with its 1980s New York setting, pop soundtrack (Huey Lewis! Phil Collins! Whitney Houston!) and stylized set pieces. It’s doubtful Christian Bale would return to the role of Patrick Bateman (and he was amazing in the movie), but as Cinematical points out, the guy proved he can sing in NEWSIES.

What? You don’t think a bloody story of a serial killer could work as a musical? What about this one?

Is there any movie they won’t try to turn into a musical these days? If it isn’t a major Broadway production like PRODUCERS, LEGALLY BLONDE, , it’s smaller productions like LORD OF THE RINGS: The Musical, and JEDI! THE MUSICAL.

One of the ones I’ve been most curious to see is EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL, and it seems there are plans to turn that movie-turned-musical into movie version now! It’s just too bad the odds are slim Bruce Campbell will do it.

p.s. Bale HATED singing in NEWSIES. He was actually quite mad about the whole project, because when he signed on it was a straight movie, that they later decided to rewrite into a musical (by the future director of High School Musical, no less). Still, he finished the movie, and respects its devoted following, but he hated the experience.

Brian — You’re dead-on about Bale hating NEWSIES. I saw him at a panel at a comic book show in Chicago last summer, and when someone mentioned how much they loved him in NEWSIES, he was visibly not thrilled to hear about that movie. He was cheerful enough, and a pro about it, but you could sense it’s not his favorite screen experience.

Can they get Joss Whedon to direct it?
