Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

New trailers: HARRY POTTER and WATCHMEN

November 14th, 2008 at 05:39pm Will Pfeifer

Couple of new trailers for eagerly anticipated 2009 releases have hit the Web. They’re “exclusives,” so I can’t just post ‘em here, but click a link and you’ll be transported to Hogwarts and an alternate Manhattan.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE – This is the real deal, a full-length trailer that should keep you interested until that countdown clock on the site hits zero.

WATCHMEN — This trailer focuses more on the murder plot of the story, and it looks like it sticks pretty close to the original comic book. (Several shots, lines of dialogue, and scenes are taken directly from the comics.) One big difference is the heroes refering to themselves as ”The Watchmen” — the word itself is never actually uttered in the comic, only glimpsed as half-visible graffiti.

One other interesting note: This comic book movie is getting an R rating, and a hard one at that. The box on the trailer says it contains “strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity and language.” In other words, I smell box office gold. (That nudity, by the way, is probably going to be a giant blue naked guy, just so you know.)

These both look so frickin’ good.

    Can. Not. Wait.

Watchmen looks like it should be just as well made as “The Dark Knight”, or Zac Snyder’s last masterpiece: “The 300″.

This movie, in no way, shape, or form can be bad. NBot with Snyder at the helm. I was suprised at the assemblence of “B-List” and unknown actors, though. That is anothe rindicator, to me, that they have something really special. This movie will be a launching pad, and throw some of these underrated actors into the limelight.

And, as a bonus, the role of Rorschach (the guy in the hat and black/white mask) is being played by Jackie Earle Haley, one of the great Hollywood comeback stories of all time. He plays Kelly Leak in the original BAD NEWS BEARS, way back in 1976, then co-stars in BREAKING AWAY, then disappears for almost 20 years. Finally, he reappears in the remake of ALL THE KINGS MEN, then gets an Oscar nomination for LITTLE CHILDREN. Rorschach is probably the meatiest role in WATCHMEN, so I can’t wait to see what he does with it. Best of all, he seems like a nice, down-to-earth guy who’s thankful for his good fortune and wants to make the most of it.

I still need to read that graphic novel.

I agree about Jackie Earle Haley. He’s a good, humble person, and deserves this.

Zac Snyder had said that Mr. Haley made his own short film, himself portraying Rorschach, and submitted it to Mr. Snyder, just asking to be considered for the role. Mr. Snyder thought the self-made short film was so amazing, that he didn’t consider anyone else after watching it.

Hopefully, that will be a bonus feature on the special edition DVD next Christmas.
