Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Being cool isn’t always a good thing, Joan

The snarkmeisters over at FILM THREAT have released their annual list of “The Frigid 50: The Coldest People in Hollywood,” and lo and behold, there’s a (semi) local name among the usual suspects. Rochelle native Joan Allen clocks in at No. 35 for one movie and one movie only. DEATH RACE.

Here’s what her listing says:

Really, anybody who had anything to do with DEATH RACE deserves to be on the list. Allen on list particularly because – unlike Jason Statham and Tyrese Gibson – she’s been nominated for an Oscar three times and SHOULD KNOW BETTER. We understand the economy is not at its best, so she can be forgiven for going for the quick buck, but still… DEATH RACE!?!

I haven’t seen the movie, but I suspect they’re right.

I agree. Bad movie choice. I may be judging unfairly, as I haven’t, nor ever will, see this one.

She can, and should, do better. I thought Face-Off was a bad stretch for her, too.

I actually like FACE/OFF — maybe it’s just the John Woo fan in me, but I thought all the actors knew they were making an over-the-top movie that bordered on being a comedy, and just went with it.

She’s a great actress, though. Just watched NIXON again, and she’s amazing as Pat.

THE CONTENDER, though far from a perfect film, was fairly solid and featured Joan Allen in a strong performance in addition to an excellent supporting cast (Jeff Bridges, Sam Elliot, Gary Oldman, Christian Slater,…)

I can’t fault Allen for doing Death Race. I actually have more respect for people who alternate their “Oscar-bait” films with some done just for fun than I do for those who do nothing but highbrow stuff. The best recent examples are Will Smith (I AM LEGEND/PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, HANCOCK/SEVEN POUNDS) and then of course Steven Spielberg (JURASSIC PARK/SCHINDLER’S LIST, LOST WORLD/AMISTAD, MUNICH/WAR OF THE WORLDS,…)
