Golden Globe nominations

Here, fresh from their announcement this morning, are the Golden Globe nominations. There’s no Best Picture nod for THE DARK KNIGHT, which is surprising, but IN BRUGES gets a nod in the comedy category. (It’s a good movie, but a very bleak comedy). Other notable bits: Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet both nab multiple nominations, Heath Ledger gets a posthumous nod for his amazing Joker performance and Tom Cruise gets a supporting nod for his foul-mouthed studio chief in TROPIC THUNDER. It was funny, don’t get me wrong, but if Cruise wins (and I don’t think he will), he’d better give that award to the makeup crew.

The Golden Globes are such a joke. The Hollywood Foreign Press is a joke, and the fact that Hollywood has embraced their event as a legitimate awards show just baffles me.

I do like seeing IN BRUGES get some love, though. So if anything good comes out of the Globes, it will be to raise Academy awareness to that film.

…and Tom Cruise? Give me a break - his performance was nothing but stunt casting, and neither the makeup nor his performance was convincing or the slightest bit humorous. (and that credit sequence dance? Cruise ruined that movie for me.)

I’m with Brian M, Tom Cruise was in no way pivotal to the humor, for me, anyway, in Tropic Thunder.

Robert Downey Junior, however, was hilarious.

Supporting Actor, to me, should go to Heath Ledger. His performance in The Dark Knight, whether a fan of the genre, or not, was truly amazing.

His portrayal made Jack Nicholson’s (which was good, don’t get me wrong) portrayal of the same character look almost amateurish, in my opinion.

Exactly, echo! I remember in my original Dark Knight review, I said “Heath Ledger’s Joker makes Jack Nicholson’s Joker look like Cesar Romero’s Joker” lol
