Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

In this week’s Movie Man column, I make my picks for my favorite discs of the past year. Categories include CLASSICS, CRIME, COMEDY, DOCUMENTARY, HORROR, TV, SUPERHEROES and ETC (led by Guy Maddin’s BRAND UPON THE BRAIN, as seen above). The online version includes my runner-ups, a bit of a bonus that’s not part of the print version.

Here’s a little teaser to lure you over to the full list: My top superhero movie does feature Batman, but it’s not THE DARK KNIGHT. Intrigued? Click here – and then come back here to share your picks and make your comments.

Just sent your list to the family entertainment director. He orders most of the movies we watch. Had to cut and paste because I couldn’t find an “email send.” Did I miss it? We saw the Sopranos and Mad Men.series. Some interesting sounding entries on your list.

Confessions of a Superhero was an excellent movie.

I felt the worst for Batman, because everything that came out of his mouth was an absolute distortion of the truth.

He was truly as removed from reality as anyone I’ve ever seen.

    It’s a shame, really.

The only normal one was Wonder Woman.

I just finished watching BRAND UPON THE BRAIN, and I really enjoyed it. I also listened to the Guy Maddin interview where he talked about his influences, and I found it fascinating. I watched the movie in two segments, and I happened to watch the commentary in between, so I could really see all of the influences he was talking about. I thought his story about his grandfather’s burial was also fascinating—and definitely bizarre. The funeral in the movie had seemed fantastic on first viewing, but after hearing Maddin’s true story, it resonated more. Have you watched MY WINNIPEG yet? I can’t wait to see that one, and I missed it on IFC.
