Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Any excuse to discuss how much I hate PRETTY WOMAN is OK by me

Over at Turner Classic Movie’s Movie Morlock’s blog, writer “medusamorlock” writes about a category of movies we all have our picks for, movies that we “will not watch, no way, no how, under any circumstances.”

Medusa lists a couple that I’d place on my own anti-favorites list: PRETTY WOMAN and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. In the case of the first one, I just can’t stomach Julia Roberts. What’s more, I can’t even understand her appeal. I don’t find her attractive, I don’t think she can act, and I don’t find her likeable. Why would I want to watch a movie starring her? Simple. I don’t. So I don’t.

In the case of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, I just think it’s way too long, way too boring and completely lacking in any dramatic conflict. The kids are annoying, Julie Andrews — despite her obvious talent — gets on my nerves and Christopher Plummer is dull as dishwater. It’s the sort of Oscar-winning movie that’s barely viewable (by me, at least) today.

Haven’t seen SEX AND THE CITY, and I don’t have any plans too. I did see one of Medusa’s other anti-favorites, ENCHANTED, and thought it was actually pretty entertaining.

How about you guys? Any anti-favorites you’d care to share?

I feel the same way you do about Julia Roberts.

The “inside joke” in Ocean’s 12, about how they pretended that the character that Julia Roberts played in the movie was the actual Julia Roberts (because the character whom she played was considered by her colleagues to “look like Julia Roberts”). That one ended it all for me with that series.

I haven’t seen an Ocean’s anything since, nor will I, in protest of terrible writing and an “inside joke” that the actors enjoyed, but left the audience choking back their disappointment at having paid to see such foolery..

I’m pretty passionate about that one….

I really don’t care for Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt, either (although Brad Pitt is actually a decent actor).

I’m with you on OCEAN’S 12, but you should give OCEAN’S 13 a try, Echo4Charlie — it’s a straight (well, sort of) heist movie, much like the first one, and best of all — not a Julia Roberts in sight!

I’ll never watch Dirty Dancing again.
I hated everything about that movie, except Patrick Swayze, who is, otherwise, a good actor.
    I hated the script.
    I hated the music.
    I just hated it.
    What a waste of time.

I can’t say I share your view of Julia Roberts. I don’t LOVE her. But, I don’t hate her, either.

I know I’ll make some enemies but I won’t ever, ever, ever watch any of the Stallone films. Rocky(s) included. Nope. I won’t. Not ever. No way.
    e4c,
Watch Brad Pitt in SNATCH. You may appreciate him more.

    Titanic. It’s terrible.

I liked Ocean’s 12 (and 13), and thought the inside jokes were pretty funny. I’d actually say Ocean’s 11 is the weakest of the three.

I love Brad Pitt - many of his films are in my Top 10-20. But SNATCH is definitely NOT one of them.

TITANIC is a good movie. Not like best of all time or anything, but good nonetheless. I think it’s largely a victim of overexposure and hype. People woudn’t be so vehemently against it if it weren’t for it’s bafflingly huge box office and the DiCaprio hype at the time.

    Some of my picks:
    * any of the AUSTIN POWERS flicks - overrated, unfunny, and just rehashing (and in many cases, redoing exactly) jokes Myers has done in other films or on SNL. Myers’ best is still SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER.
    * SPEED RACER - what a pile of crap
    * hokumbo, you think you’re gonna make enemies? How about this: I really don’t like the GODFATHER movies. They’re too long, boring, hugely overrated, and the acting ranges from mediocre to way too over-the-top Ditto for GOODFELLAS
    * ANYTHING by Woody Allen, Jerry Lewis, or Uwe Boll

There are a ton of junk films I have no desire to see, but let’s focus on some of the supposed good ones.

    THE COLOR PURPLE
    CRASH
    FIGHT CLUB
    MAGNOLIA
    EYES WIDE SHUT
    COLD MOUNTAIN
    THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP
    GANGS OF NEW YORK
    THE LAST SAMURAI
    KILL BILL: VOLUMES 1 & 2

All highly overrated and ridden with major, painful flaws. No need to see them ever again. Ever.
