Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Bad special effects. Bad, bad special effects!

Yesterday, I posted a link to the list of the best 50 special effects shots of all time, courtesy of the Den of Geeks. Today, here’s a link to the other side of the coin — the “Top 24 Worst Special Effects of All Time” from the same site.

Once again, they’re good choices — including shots from SUPERMAN and JAWS. If you’ve seen the movies dozens of times (like me), you’ll know exactly which shots they’re talking about.

It was truly a tragedy and a loss when Superman was unable to save Plastictoytrainhouse City from the flood when the Hoover Dam burst.

Shall we all spend a moment in silence, for remembrance of those plastic molded citizens who were lost in that disaster…………………

When I saw this entry, my first thought was SOUND OF THUNDER, and sure enough it made their list. But I’m surprised they picked the clip they did, which probably shows some of the BEST effects in the flick. That flick had its money cut off but was still dumped into release, despite the fact that several effects were literally unfinished, and you can tell. Temp effects, half-rendered stuff…. It was like watching a workprint.

The Sound of Thunder deserves so much better. I think one of the best takes on it was done by The Simpsons.
