Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Another WATCHMEN review

Over at CHUD.com, Davin Faraci offers his take on the eagerly awaited (well, by me at least) big screen version of WATCHMEN. And he’s pleased, to put it mildly…

If nothing else, Zack Snyder’s WATCHMEN demands praise as an awe-inspiring achievement. Snyder has done what many considered impossible - he took Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s seminal comic book, WATCHMEN, and turned it into a movie. And not just a movie; Snyder hasn’t created some processional of images or a living audio book. He’s made a film that feels like a living, breathing thing all its own while also being - almost completely - the book.

Pretty positive, eh? That’s nothing. Listen to what other movie Faraci compares it to…

In many ways WATCHMEN reminds me of Francis Ford Coppola’s THE GODFATHER … Like THE GODFATHER, WATCHMEN is story about power in post-WWII 20th century America, except that the Corleone saga is about acquiring power while WATCHMEN is about using it.

for every positive review, I’ve seen a lukewarm-to-negative one. But I suppose you’re going to ignore those and pretend it’s nothing but praise, right?

Yes, because every day I get a check from Warner Bros. to publish only positive WATCHMEN reviews. Actually, I ran a pair of reviews — one positive, one that called it a “staggering failure” — back on Feb. 17. I’m waiting for the big guns to weigh in — TIME, Ebert, Slate.com, The Onion — and I’ll post those too.

From The Hollywood Reporter today, “Looks like we have the first real flop of 2009.”

    This could go downhill fast.
