When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. PUBLIC ENEMIES trailer

4 comments March 4th, 2009

Here’s a link to the first trailer for PUBLIC ENEMIES, the much anticipated Depression-era crime movie starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent trying to bring him to justice. Looks good — both actors are strong, of course, and director Michael Mann sure knows how to use that widescreen for dramatic effect.

It doesn’t open until July, but in the meantime, why not check out the 1934 movie MANHATTAN MELODRAMA? There’s a connection to this movie — a huge one, in fact. Do you know what it is?

Have I mentioned this movie coming out called WATCHMEN?

In advance of the imminent release of WATCHMEN, the Onion AV Club hosts an interview with Jackie Earle Haley, who stars in the movie as Rorschach, arguably the most complex and compelling of the film’s “heroes.” It’s a juicy role, and judging by Haley’s performance in LITTLE CHILDREN, he’s eminently qualified to burrow beneath the surface and find the dark, disturbing (and vulnerable) core of the character.

But if you’re about my age — pushing 42 — you might remember Haley from his career as a child star, playing tough guy Kelly Leak in the 1976 sports classic THE BAD NEWS BEARS. Here’s what he looked like then…

And here’s what he looks like now (as Rorshach, minus the mask)…

Find out what he’s been doing between those two photos at the Onion interview here.
