Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Another STAR WARS trilogy?!?

Believe it or not, George Lucas is (finally) going to follow up on his plans to deliver another three STAR WARS films, bringing the total to nine. And, like the rumors have been claiming since the early 1980s, these films will take place after the original trilogy, following up on the adventures of Luke, Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The studio plans to use the same technology that de-aged Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart in the third X-MEN movie to pull the same trick with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, though to a much greater degree because they’ll be in the whole movie. And, like the last three STAR WARS movies, the vast majority of the special effects will be computer-generated, meaning those actors (who must be getting a bundle to reprise their roles) might be doing little more than voice work. With the state of special effects these days — especially at Skywalker Ranch — we might not be able to tell the difference.

Sure those movies came out three decades ago, and — let’s face it — these new ones are bound to be disappointing. But I have to admit, I’m pretty excited.

Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn and André René Roussimoff  (aka André the Giant) in a scene from THE PRINCESS BRIDE.

Here’s an interesting “Random Roles” interview with playwright and character actor Wallace Shawn where he discusses everything from his new movie, MARIE & BRUCE, to his appearances in such films as MANHATTAN, CLUELESS, RADIO DAYS, TOY STORY and MY DINNER WITH ANDRE.

And speaking of Andre, here’s what Shawn has to say about his PRINCESS BRIDE co-star, Andre the Giant…

He was marvelous. But there was something painful about his situation, because he already had lost some of his strength. Of course it was well-known that he could not live terribly long, because no one with his condition did. So it was all a bit poignant. But he was always very, very intelligent, and he was very kind to me, because I was quite afraid of certain things we had to do, and he was very, very nice to me. He was a fascinating person, because he had come from a small village in France and wanted to travel. And he quite consciously decided that in order to travel, his best option was to try to become a wrestler and that’s what he did.
