DVD Review: THE SPIRIT

It’s not a good movie, but it is an interesting one — here’s my review of Frank Miller’s 2008 bomb, a failed adaptation of the classic 1940s comic book hero, The Spirit. The print version can be found here…
And the video version — with some really strange clips from the movie — can be found here.

Just watched it myself this weekend, and oh MY is it BAD! I couldn’t turn it off, though - it HAD to get better, right? (It didn’t - it got progressively worse and worse).
On a side note, why are you paying anything to rent movies? Just get them from the library like I do. They get pretty much everything that comes out. Your wife even works there, right?

I love the films of superheroes, and the old “pulp” heroes, even as campy as they get (i.e. The Shadow, Doc Savage, The Phantom, and I’ll even throw the Rocketeer in there, as his story is set in a “pulp” setting, even though he hadn’t been created, actually, until the ’80s).
This one, however, looks so bad, and no positive reviews have even come out, I’ll wait it out until it is $ 5 at Target (which won’t be long….as, it is not selling so well). As bad as it may be, I’ll add it to my collection for that price.
I have not heard one good thing about this movie, which is too bad. the source material is rich, and, in my opinion, is “how can you go wrong” action film material. Apparently Frank miller found how to go wrong.
The worst part, for me, is how dark they are trying to make these superhero movies, now. I like them, but, they are more geared toward adults, and not meeting the middle ground needed to be suitable for family attendance, as well. It can be done….Bryan Singer did it with the first two X-Men films (which, subsequently, were the best of the series), they pulled it off with The Phantom and The Shadow (albeit, yes, they were a bit campy).
We’re losing our way when you take a pulp hero like The Spirit, make it too gory for children, and then, on top of that, make it so bizzare that even adults can’t stand it.

I disagree about needing to meet middle ground. he worst thing you can do do a movie is water it down to meet a certain rating or to cater to a larger audience. If a film is PG material, fine. But don’t alter your tone or story just to expand your audience.

I’m with you, Brian, when it comes to movies like Watchmen, The Punisher, and things of an already mature (content) nature.
I guess that I just don’t visualize the Spirit in that type of dark, graphic storyline………………………………………..
