Your chances for getting a Best Picture nomination just doubled

According to this article by Timothy M. Gray of Variety, ten movies — not five, as in previous years — will be nominated for Best Picture for the next Academy Awards. The announcement was made today by Academy chief Sid Ganis, and those nominations will be announced Feb. 2, 2010.
I’m guessing the Academy decided to do this to counter criticism that the only movies nominated are critics favorites that the general public doesn’t care about, and with 10 slots to fill, there are bound to be some crowd pleasers in the mix. All I know is that my annual Oscar pool just got a lot more complicated.

WORST. Idea. Ever.
This is NOT a good thing. For those who complain about length, the additional Best Picture recaps further extend the show, and let’s be honest - the ONLY reason they’re doing it is so they can include some “popular” films in the list, but without REALLY considering them. It’s just for ratings and placating the public.
…not to mention, there’s never been ten worthy films in a given year

and Michael Bay receives his first Best Picture nomination!
I’m guessing that adding “Best Picture Nominee” to 5 more DVD boxes a year will be a nice incentive. Need to get those sales up.

Agreed. This a a shameless grab for (a) Oscar night ratings, (b) a bump in the box office of nominees in the post-nomination-pre-Oscar-night window, and (c) more DVD sales (which is where the really money is these days.
That being said, if it beings more attention to movies that should’ve have been nominated, like ZODIAC or CHILDREN OF MEN, there might be a silver lining to this silly cloud.

Nikkie Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily column pretty much hits the nail on the head:
Shameless Pandering

This hasn’t been a very popular decision: http://www.newsy.com/videos/oscars_and_then_there_were_ten
I don’t think they thought it through, they will have to change the entire voting structure to accommodate the expanded category.
