Movie Man
When film critic Will Pfeifer isn’t watching movies, he’s reading about movies, talking about movies, thinking about movies or dreaming about movies. Now he shares that unhealthy obsession with you. From Hollywood hits to Japanese obscurities, from Oscar night to the summer season, he’s got movies on the brain — and on this blog.

Everybody into the pool!

George Clooney in THE GOOD GERMAN

Over at Gawker.com, Natasha VC has an article examining what she refers to as “pool movies” — i.e., the films directors made not for the big artistic challenge, but instead for the big financial reward.

Though some of her picks seem pretty dead on — really, why else would Jonathan Demme remake THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE other than the cash — others don’t give credit where credit it due. Soderbergh’s THE GOOD GERMAN is more risky and ambitious than TRAFFIC, and Fincher’s THE PANIC ROOM might not be as edgy as FIGHT CLUB (the film that preceded it) but if you watch the movie or listen to the commentary track, it’s obvious Fincher was excited by the technical challenge of it all. Plus, he followed it with ZODIAC, one of the best (and least compromising) movies of the 21st century.

As for Ang Lee’s THE HULK, he might have accepted job with popcorn movie success in mind, but anyone who saw it can testify that Lee threw in so many quirky personal elements — those crazy panels within the screen, for example — that it’s practically an art film. Plus, when you quote a Rex Reed review in your article (as Natasha does in reference to LUCKY YOU, you’ve all but admitted you’re grasping at straws.)

Read the entire article here – and be warned, the language over at Gawker gets a bit salty.

Finally! A glimpse of ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox’

Cinematical.com has the first images from Wes Anderson’s upcoming film, THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX. And here they are…

The film is based on a book by Roald Dahl (CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) and features the voices of Meryl Streep, George Clooney and Anderson vets Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Anjelica Huston and Bill Murray. It’s set to hit theaters November 13.

I have no idea what this movie will be like — I mean, no idea — but judging by the background in the top photo, the sets will have the same wonderfully obsessive quality as the other films on Anderson’s resume.

So, is this the sequel to ‘8 1/2′ or the prequel to ‘10′?

I wasn’t a big fan of Rob Marshall’s Oscar-winner CHICAGO (for one thing, it was edited to maniacally that I could’ve danced in it and looked like Fred Astaire), but I have to admit, this trailer for NINE (opening in November) looks pretty good. Nice visuals, heck of a cast, and after his jaw-dropping performance in THERE WILL BE BLOOD, I’d pay to see Daniel Day Lewis read the phone book.
