Here it is …. the AVATAR trailer

Apple is apparently still working out some kinks in presenting the trailer for James Cameron’s AVATAR, but in the meantime, you can see the French version by clicking here. (Don’t worry — there’s only one line of dialogue.) I think this is the same thing that will be attached to INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS this weekend (well, in English, of course).
It’s visually impressive, to be sure — and looks to include the next generation of the space Marines we saw in Cameron’s ALIENS more than 20 years ago.
Is it the next leap in movie technology? Well, t don’t know about that — but I’ll bet it looks damned good in 3-D.
And, assuming Apple corrects its glitches, you can see the English version here.

I went and saw the IMAX 3-D 16-minute presentation of scenes from AVATAR, and it looked pretty sweet. The CG is light years better than all the really crappy Zemeckis mo-cap, and everything truly looks photo-realistic. I will also say to those who are underwhlemed, even just the regular trailer looks much MUCH better on a movie screen instead of a computer monitor.
As for the 3-D, well, it’s a fun and interesting gimmick, but it is just that - a gimmick. I don’t think it adds anything to the movie. Actually, these days I think 3-D detracts from films because they’re more interested in making cool 3-D shots instead of focusing on what is best for the story, whether it be shot composition or actual content.. I’ll be glad when the 3-D fad fades… again.

CG as a corrective/background plate tool is about as perfect as a tool for that can be. It’s great for mechanical ships/suits too.
However, when using CG to create full movement organic characters the instinct seems to be show more. Way more. Wrong.
Just because you can hyper-realize a living creature in cartoonish CG detail doesn’t mean it should always be done in a live action based film. THE INCREDIBLE HULK was a decent film except that the Hulk and Abomination looked like they came from an all CG animation film. They were horribly out of place when shown in such prominence with real sets and actors.
From watching this AVATAR trailer I think everything looks amazing EXCEPT the Avatar and the Na’vi. Especially their movements. It has the same awkward and too ‘clean’ sense of it. I was able to really get into the trailer until that point, but once they are on screen it ruins it for me.
In a film like IRON MAN CG seems to work. Even in a dud film like TRANSFORMERS CG seems to work. But those creatures are mechanical and I think that’s the big difference.
I still feel the best use of CG for full organic characters in live action would be a mix of CG and costume/prosthetic work. Something we’re seeming to see in the footage from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, which looks fantastic by the way.
