And the hosts are…

Finally an Oscar host — make that hosts — that shows a little imagination in the decision process. As the academy announced Tuesday, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will tag-team the ceremony, which airs March 7 on ABC.
After the Academy increased its best picture category to 10 films and tapped a pair of producers, it announced that there will be two hosts for the 82nd annual Academy Awards — Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin — the first time the show has had multiple hosts since the 1987 ceremonies.
Both men, of course, have hosted SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE several times, both have Oscar connections (Martin has hosted, Baldwin was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for THE COOLER) and — no coincidence here! — they both co-star in IT’S COMPLICATED, a comedy opening on Christmas Day. (The movie also stars Meryl Streep, who isn’t hosting, but certainly has her share of nominations.)

I love Steve Martin. I hope he plays his banjo. Alec Baldwin is funny, too. Maybe I’ll actually watch an Oscars telecast for the first time since, well, since Bob Hope died. (He hosted the Academy Awards 18 times.)
Seriously, I’ve watched them from time to time, but not all the way through. Usually I haven’t seen more than one or two of the movies that are up for awards. I wait to see who won before plunking down actual money.

Of course, I always — always — make a point to watch the part where they announce the winner of the Irving Thalberg award.

This year, Chuck, the Thalberg is going to producer John Calley. He’s done fine work, but isn’t quite as intriguing a choice as last year’s recipient, Mr. Jerry Lewis.
The honorary Oscars, though, are going to an interesting trio: actress Lauren Bacall, cinematographer Gordon Willis and (my favorite) producer and director Roger Corman.

Baldwin will be interesting, but Martin has not been entertaining nor funny in more than 15 years. And when he DOES pop up in something, it’s so bad I’m embarrassed for him. His last hosting gig was laugh-free, and he’s completely irrelevant these days. We can only hope he comes down with some serious illness that makes him drop out.
…Before going to these two, the Academy asked Robert Downey Jr and Ben Stiller o pair up for the job, but they turned it down. That would have been SO much better. Downey, anyway.
…and Chuck, you’ve got it all wrong. 95% of the time, the award winners are the ones that are NOT worth your money. The best movies always get shafted.
