Throughout the Rock River Valley – businesses, individuals and school children are participating in a special penny drive to help children in some of the poorest parts of the world. Greg Mortenson, a mountain climber and author of Three Cups of Tea – One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time will be coming to Rockford September 19 and 20. He is a remarkable humanitarian who has dedicated his life to promoting education and literacy in remote, volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The money collected will be given to Greg Mortenson on September 19th to help in his mission to “promote peace…one school at a time.”
Our goal is to raise $50,000 to present to Greg Mortenson when he comes to Rockford. This will build and support a school in Afghanistan for 3 – 5 years. Your pennies will help!
What is Pennies for Peace really all about?

After reading Three Cups of Tea and learning about the Pennies for Peace campaign, I introduced the campaign to my 5th graders. My class at Brookview Elementary in Rockford accepted the challenge to help raise a portion of the $50, 000.00. These students devised public relations, accounting practices, and overall management of the project. To date, our school has raised close to $3,000.00. We have incorporated this project into reading, math, writing, and social studies activities. The most important outcome; however, is that my students realize that they can be positive change agents in their school, community, and half-way around the globe. They grasp the “big picture” - their efforts are working to build peaceful relationships with other countries, thus working to eradicate war and violence. They know their involvement in projects like this help others less fortunate and that education is the answer to solving many ills in our world. OUR (Rockford) children are catalysts for change and have accomplished a great deal. I am so proud of them. Kudos Brookview Elementary students!

My school which is Addison Trail High school donated money for the foundation of Pennies for Peace. I am not sure of the amount of mney we made, but I do know that we have made such an impact. I am proud of my peers and school for collecting a successful amount of money for schools across the globe. Every child derserves a chance to get an education and an oppurtunity to dream about their future with an education. Being a 15 year with an opportuinity to help the less fortunate makes me feel happy that young ones can make a great impact too. =]
