An abandoned home at 212 S. Adams St. will be demolished by the end of the month, South Beloit Mayor Mike Duffy said.
The city has been working since May to raze the home, which tested positive for asbestos.
The City Council awarded the demolition and asbestos removal project to Ironwood Environmental Inc.
The property has been deemed unsafe by the county and has become a site for squatters, bats and rodents.
The city has owned the land since the 1980s, but a family was able to purchase the house through a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development program.
While the family met contract requirements for many years, the homeowners eventually moved out and left unpaid property taxes.
The city will try to sell the lot once the building is demolished.
