Last week the whistle blower website Wikileaks released 400,000 secret military reports from the Iraq war, the single largest military leak in human history. The reports show what so many of us already suspected, that torture was condoned, prisoner abuse including rape ignored, friendly fire was commonplace, and at least 15,000 civilian deaths went previously undocumented despite the military knowing about them.
Currently the Pentagon lists approximately 66,000 civilian deaths due to the occupation, but if this leak shows us anything it’s that the true number of innocent Iraqi’s murdered may not be known for many years to come, if ever. This is what your government thinks of you; not only do they send our sons and daughters, our siblings and our friends to a war based on lies, not only do they ignore international law as well as US law regarding rules of engagement, not only do they spend a trillion of our dollars on it, they must also insult our intelligence by lying to us about it. And these war criminals will go unpunished.
Anyone who cares to see can visit the Guardian’s website where the UK newspaper has mapped every death listed in these logs.
Pundits on the right are telling us that these logs contain nothing we didn’t already know. The fact that they wish to downplay this discovery is disturbing enough, but more disturbing is the fact that they’re right. We know this is happening, these logs merely confirm it, and yet we still do nothing to stop it. Oh sure, combat operations have ended in Iraq, the 50,000 soldiers still stationed there are now called analysts and consultants, the 100,000 mercenaries that never left are still referred to as private security contractors. The show’s over folks, nothing to see here.
Why should we care anyway? This is just how we fight our illegal wars in the Land of The Free™
