Spent a little bit of time Friday talking with Chuck Sweeny and Wally Haas about the upcoming mayoral election.
Haas expects independent incumbent Larry Morrissey to win in a fairly close race (not surprising considering our endorsement), but Sweeny wasn’t quite ready to pick a winner quite yet. Both expected a very low turnout.
Sweeny discussed a few recent columns he wrote about Democratic Candidate Doug Block, one asking for an explanation regarding recent tactics coming out of Block’s campaign, and another featuring Block’s response.

Lesson learned: Have data in front of you before picking a fight with the sports desk.
In light of the start of Major League Baseball season, Matt Trowbridge, Tony Garcia and I discussed 2009 expectations for the Cubs, White Sox and Brew Crew. Both guests think the Cubs and Sox will do relatively well.
A couple of arguments came up that I refuse to cave in on: The White Sox are definitely not young, and the only difference between the Red Sox and the Yankees is the accent.
Check out the Chicago White Sox depth chart:
C A.J. Pierzynski, 32
1B Paul Konerko, 33
2B Chris Getz, 25
SS Alexei Ramirez, 27
3B Josh Fields, 26
LF Carlos Quentin, 26
CF Dewayne Wise, 31
RF Jermaine Dye, 35
DH Jim Thome, 38
Average age: 30.333. Point made.
And while yes, the Yankees and Red Sox have gotten smarter with their prospects recently (refusing to trade young talent like Ian Kennedy or Clay Buchholz), my big problem with both teams is that they can and will outspend any other team in the league if it makes their team better. I appreciate their desire to win, but I really think baseball would be much better off with a salary cap.

This four-person NCAA tournament roundtable is the first podcast I ever did for the Register Star. It landed on the homepage for most of the day before the tourney and eventually settled here.
I nailed 15 of my Sweet 16 picks, but picked just one of the Final Four teams (North Carolina).

For what it’s worth, I’m one of those guys who can’t draw worth a lick but knows how to use Photoshop. So I won’t be insulted if you’d like to rip on my sketches.
Here’s what some other people are using for podcast logos.

Some of the most enlightening and entertaining parts of my day are the times I spend chatting at my colleagues’ desk. Many of the folks working here in the News Tower are highly specialized, so they tend to have a ridiculous amount of knowledge about their field. It’s sort of nuts how much you can learn in a day if you’re the least bit curious.
I want to use this podcast as a way to share those conversations with the Register Star’s audience.
I’ve recruited GO editor Lisa Glowinski to help me with this project. Our goal is to post a podcast every Monday morning, but I’m thinking we’ll be capable of posting much more often than that.
I’m still learning what works and what doesn’t for the podcast, so don’t hesitate to comment on the blog or e-mail me at podcast@rrstar.com if you have any questions or suggestions.
Thanks for stopping by, and stay tuned.
