Mad Men: Episode five
September 14th, 2009 at 01:00pm Billy Kulpa

For two weeks in a row, major news revolving around Betty fuels the plot of Mad Men.
This week’s episode, titled, “The Fog,” gives us the birth of baby Eugene. And after Betty’s seemingly endless pregnancy, we’re sure she’s happy to introduce him to the world (Although as Will points out, Betty doesn’t seem to be happy about anything these days, does she?).
This week’s episode features plenty of plot points, including:
- The groundwork for another potential Don Draper affair
- An awkward encounter for Pete and Peggy
- And the return of Duck, easily one of the most interesting characters on the show
We’re almost to the halfway point of season three. Drop us a line at podcast@rrstar.com if you have any questions or comments.

By the way, in the very first episode of Mad Men where Don asks the black waiter what cig he prefers (Don is smoking Luckies) the guy tells him Old Golds, because when he was in the service, that’s what they gave him. Mymy, to think how everything has changed. That’s what make this 50+- year interval so interesting.
I don’t think baby Eugene is out of the woods yet. Even though he is a fictional baby, I hope he lives, sorry, though I was agreeing with you guys that perhaps it might parallel Jackie Kennedy’s baby’s death.
Betty’s dreams are too obscure for me to comment upon, unfortunately. The only thing I have been able to glean is that Betty feels some sort of guilt in her relationship with her father. Sorry, when I download the episodes and am able to review them, I may have a more comprehensive analysis.
I of course got Pete’s Admiral epiphany: that perhaps they should start advertising to “Negroes”, but the only one who got that was the British guy, Lane Pryce, because Americans are still somewhat racist. I saw that yesterday, though I already knew it without President Jimmy Carter having to tell me that, that Americans don’t think Obama can do a good job as President of the U.S. because he is blac k .
Duck is smart like fox. He knows, even though Peggy is female, that she and Pete are the driving future forces of the advertising business.. She is starting to think like a “guy” in asking for her just due, like equal pay. You never see our dear Joan (love her madly) asking for a raise. Hello, she knows she is a woman. Don’t ask for a raise, for heaven’s sake, Man will tell you..
