We’re at episode three of the season and find ourselves knee deep in character development. Mad Men is great for changing everything with very minimal plot change, and this episode takes full advantage.
Roger wears black face. Dr. Greg isn’t the catch he at first seemed. Betty is eying older men. In this podcast, we discuss all the little things bubbling just underneath the surface.
We’d love to hear your Man Men thoughts, as well as suggestions for the podcast. Drop us a line at podcast@rrstar.com.

We (re)kick off off our Mad Men season-long podcast this week with guests Will Pfeifer and Sean Driscoll. (In truth, we recorded a podcast immediately after the season premiere, but had some technical difficulties and couldn’t post it. Better late than never, as they say.)
In this podcast, we discuss the British invasion of Sterling Cooper, Peggy’s inner Bye Bye Birdie, Bets’ father and all things Don Draper, among others.
We’d love to hear your Man Men thoughts, as well as suggestions for the podcast. Drop us a line at podcast@rrstar.com.

All-day staff training yesterday put a damper on my efforts to get the Monday Movie Recap posted on a Monday. For those of you scoring at home, that’s 2-for-3 on late podcasts for this series. And as a result, I’m now calling it the “Weekend Movie Recap.” So there.
This week, Will and I discuss the 2008 film What Just Happened. He gave it a “good, but not great” kind of review and recommended that viewers who enjoy it check out the book.
We also discuss HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, the 1945 romance I Know Where I’m Going and the 80’s buddy-cop comedy Running Scared.
*Production note
We’ve had a connection problem with one of our microphones the past couple podcasts. Will’s audio volume is a bit lower than I’d prefer. I’m going to spend some time on this and hope to have it corrected by next week.

All-day training at the Star today meant not time for podcasting.
Will try to get one up tomorrow as early as possible.

In this week’s Monday Movie Recap, we spend a lot of time talking about the 1927 silent film Metropolis. While that may not sound riveting, the film is actually fascinating. We also go over a few other oldies-but-goodies, as well as AMC’s hit drama Mad Men (which Will reviews in detail in his Movie Man column this week). Here’s the complete list, in order:
The Great Buck Howard, Metropolis, Soylent Green, Confessions of a Superhero, and my new favorite show, Mad Men.
*About this podcast
Each Monday, Register Star Movie Man Will Pfeifer and I (along with an occasional guest) will review the movies we watched over the weekend. The Movie Man already highlights one DVD release each week in his print column, so think of this as a “best of the rest” audio column.

After a few months on hiatus, the Register Star Podcast is back!
Each Monday from now until eternity, Register Star Movie Man Will Pfeifer and I will be reviewing the movies we watched over the weekend. The Movie Man already highlights one DVD release each week in his print column, so think of this as a “best of the rest” audio column.
For our first Monday Movie Recap, we tackle Watchmen, the featured flick in Will’s Movie Man column this week. We also go over a few documentaries you’ve probably never heard of (but come highly recommended) and a couple of the Harry Potter films. The complete list, in order:
Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows, Outrage, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Watchmen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Incoming Rockford School District Superintendent LaVonne Sheffield announced her leadership team Wednesday.
There’s only one member of her cabinet who’s from outside the district — Cedric Lewis from the Recovery School District in Louisiana, where Sheffield now serves as superintendent. Lewis will serve as chief financial officer in Rockford, a position he now holds in Louisiana. Superintendent Linda Hernandez will continue working with the district for an undetermined amount of time to help with the leadership transition.
Here is the rest of the Cabinet:
• Patrick Hardy, chief academic officer
• Cedric Lewis, chief financial officer
• Pamela Laughlin, special assistant to the superintendent
• Todd Schmidt, chief operations officer
• Mark Bonne, chief communications officer
• Colleen Cyrus, chief of student support and community partnerships
• Stephen Katz, board attorney and general counsel
• Gina Rinaldo-Nelson, executive assistant to the superintendent
There’s also one seat on the Cabinet that’s open and being advertised — chief accountability officer. Sheffield’s recommendations are subject to the Rockford School Board’s approval at its June 23 meeting. The new Cabinet would begin July 1.

Perhaps Soprych has unlocked the secret of the statue, named Tawaret.

On the May 11 Official Lost Podcast, the show’s executive producers tell us that the season five finale will give us all the information we need to construct the series finale. What better fuel for podcast speculation??
Will Pfeifer is on vacation this week, so he was unavailable to do the podcast. My boss, Chris Soprych, thankfully filled in.
This episode introduces us to Jacob in a big way, as well as a foil character who outright tells him how much he’d love to kill him. We learn that Jacob has spoken to many of the characters (with Juliet the notable exception, though we don’t see Miles, Frank or a few other characters meet him, either) at key points in their lives.
And we get the answer to the question “Do you know what lies in the shadow of the statue?”, even though it was in Latin and Soprych had to spend his morning translating it: “Person or thing who/which we all protect/watch over.”
*Your turn to chime in
I’d like to do one more Lost wrapup podcast when Will and I return from our vacations. Soprych and I spent a lot of time discussing our theories the series finale, so we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Just one more week of Lost until the season five finale!
Will and I discuss Will’s unwavering hatred of Jack Shepherd’s whining (seriously, he’s still playing Charlie Salinger from Party of Five), why Kate has picked up the trait and what’s up with Locke.
Part of the fun of this podcast is discussing the hidden theories surrounding Lost. Megan Crockett wrote last week, “I do care what has happened to Bernard and Rose…I seem to remember them being separated from Sawyer et al when they were all running from the flaming arrows being shot at them from the beach (right after the time skipping started). I am afraid they are dead. I loved their story, too.”
We can’t say with any credibility that Bernard and Rose are dead, but if they’re not, you gotta wonder - where the heck are they?
