RPS superintendent is among top NIU alumni

With the last day of school Monday, Superintendent Ehren Jarrett marks the end of his first year leading the Rockford Public Schools. Many readers know Dr. Jarrett as the face of the district, the leader whose appointment in 2012 signaled stability in school leadership and faith in homegrown talent.

They may not know how humble he is.

It was a Friday late in April that Dr. Jarrett slipped out of the building enroute to De Kalb. Those who knew where he went weren’t talking. But, as a former newspaper person, I had a secret weapon: Keep asking the question.

Dr. Ehren Jarrett has been honored as one of NIU's distinguished alumni for 2014.

Dr. Ehren Jarrett has been honored as one of NIU’s distinguished alumni for 2014.

It turned out that Dr. Jarrett was to be honored that night as one of Northern Illinois University’s Outstanding Alumni. The award, according to NIU, “recognizes the diverse accomplishments and contributions of the university’s most notable graduates and individuals who provide outstanding service to the university.”

No duffers in this bunch: Among the alumni honored that night with Dr. Jarrett were a physicist and former postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, a brigadier general and an administrative law judge with the National Labor Relations Board.

Even so, there were no directives given to Communications about Dr. Jarrett’s alumni award. No demands to write a news release with a 72-point headline. No order to blast it to district-wide email users.

Still, it didn’t seem right. Dr. Jarrett deserves the award and deserves the accolades. Better late than never, we’re getting the word out.
