Arts integration is golden for RPS 205 students

The Golden Mean. The Golden Ratio. The Divine Sequence. By any other name, it’s a mathematical rule of proportion that can determine whether people find art pleasing. Auburn High School teachers Miranda Schieve and Joselyn Ludtke are exploring the concept of the golden mean with their students. That’s not unusual—what’s unusual is that Schieve teaches algebra and Ludtke teaches theater at Auburn.  They are bringing their disciplines together in an arts integration project, funded by a four-year, $1.2 million grant awarded to the Rockford...

Froberg students don’t just skim–they learn by design

Fourth graders at Froberg Elementary got a letter from a toy company this week — and it had nothing to do with what they might find under the tree. The fictional letter was part of the Skimmer Challenge, a 10-week unit that introduces students to the problem-solving process used by engineers. It involves getting a design challenge (outlined in the letter), and working as a team to meet the challenge. Engineers from UTC Aerospace Systems and Woodward are volunteering at all grade levels at Froberg this year in projects like the Skimmer...

Shedd, RPS join to create ‘citizen scientists’

Thirty Rockford Public Schools students are headed to John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago on Monday. The Shedd’s goal is to create citizen scientists — young people able to think critically, analyze data and offer real value to their communities. Rockford is the only district...
