RPS 205 teaches top scholar the power of ‘thank you’

Jessica Trinh is heading to Yale University in the fall, determined to take one thing with her: gratitude. Trinh, who graduated as Auburn High School’s valedictorian last month, says she learned at the Rockford Public Schools to remember the individuals who helped her get where she is today. And today—just like the last few months—is pretty impressive: –Before she goes to Yale, Trinh will do a summer science internship at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. She will begin Monday and be assigned to a scientist...

Who will be Miss Lady Knight? Find out Saturday

Mae Vincent wants people to know that the Miss Lady Knight Pageant is not a beauty contest. RPS 205 music programs perform ‘Heroes and Villains’

I love events that bring all four of our high schools together, and the biggest one for our music departments is coming up next week. The event brings all four district high school music departments together for three performances in choir, orchestra and band. The music directors from Guilford, Auburn, Jefferson and East had fun planning this year’s theme, which is “Heroes and Villains.” Some of the selections include...

Fifth graders to try instruments at Petting Zoo

Naturally, in helping plan the district’s Instrument Petting Zoo last year, I didn’t think I’d be much help. I was so wrong. The Instrument Petting Zoo is a field trip our district fifth graders take to Riverfront Museum Park. There, they are introduced to most of the band and orchestra instruments offered at the middle school level. It’s essentially a recruiting tool for our middle school...

RPS 205 high school marching bands out in force

There’s something about watching a high school band march. Education has changed in so many ways, yet there’s something timeless about a procession of young musicians in uniform. I caught part of the Rockford Labor Day Parade this year and saw the Auburn Knights marching band in action. Band director Lynne Olson moved through the lines of marchers, helping them stay in tune and in step. Given how hot it was, I also guessed she was watching for any unintended swaying. I guessed right. Mrs. Olson emailed me about how she monitors carefully for...
