Uniform stores help RPS 205 families at Beyer, Haskell

With the deposit of 305 shirts, pants and skorts, the Uniform Bank at Haskell Year-Round Academy is ready for business. Thanks to local donors – led by dentist Cyrus Oates – families at Haskell will have an easy way to replace uniforms when they are worn or outgrown. Chess on the move in Rockford Public Schools

Rockford Scholastic Chess heads into its next tournament Nov. 21 with strong representation from the Rockford Public Schools. There are clubs at Washington Academy; Haskell Year-Round Academy; West View, Whitehead, Lewis Lemon and Hillman elementary schools; and Flinn, RESA and Marshall middle schools. At Washington alone, 136 students are signed up for chess; the club at Washington averages more than 100 students after school on Mondays. Jayvon Coleman was in the fourth grade at Haskell Year-Round Academy in the Rockford Public Schools when he learned the game of chess. A quick study, he has finished at or near the top in the tournaments he’s played. Students at Haskell Year-Round Academy play chessball for all the right reasons: It’s fun. There are snacks. It’s a time to get your homework done. Chessball isn’t one game. It’s a combination of activities — dodge ball and chess — that happens after school on Thursdays at Haskell.
