Marching band in RPS 205 ready for first competition

Eighth grader Hazel Elbers is the only student from Eisenhower Middle School in the Rockford Public Schools district-wide marching band. The band is a lot of work, she says, but that hasn’t discouraged three of her friends. They’re talking about joining the band next year, Hazel said. They’d better be ready for business. “These students are no casual, drop-in-when-you-can kind of kids–they mean business and come to play,” said Steve Mikulay, who directs the Rockford Marching Band, which is in its first year in RPS 205. RPS 205 seniors learn how to have ‘nose for opportunity,’ heart to solve problems

The accidental banker had a word of encouragement for the skeptical high school senior. “Can we turn Rockford into Silicon Valley?” East High School senior Karina Sisnero asked. Wall-to-wall learning helps RPS 205, Habitat for Humanity

The chorus of hammers at the north side of the Guilford High School field house was interrupted last week by the unmistakable sound of a wood panel being ripped from a frame. Just a few minutes before, students in the Orientation to Construction class had discovered their mistake: A wall panel for a home was installed inside out. Their teacher, Mark Anderson, was unfazed. “Forty-four panels and only one mistake? That’s not too bad,” he said. Students in the Guilford construction class have built walls for a new Rockford Area Habitat for...

Scholarship winner in RPS 205 finds promise in Rockford

Erica Bibalou took away two messages from a speech at a fundraising luncheon last fall: It’s about getting one step closer to your goals, every day; and no matter what people say, you can do it. Bibalou didn’t just listen to those messages. She’s living them. It was announced last month that Bibalou, an East High School senior, was one of four Rockford Public Schools students to receive a scholarship from Rockford Promise. Bibalou received one of two, two-year scholarships to Rock Valley College; the other two students received four-year...

Janet Lynn among inductees at RPS 205 Champions Ball and Hall of Fame

It’s been 44 years since Janet Lynn put Rockford on the map in figure skating, but her legacy remains strong. Lynn, perhaps the most famous female athlete to come out of Rockford, will be one of the inductees at Saturday’s RPS 205 Champions Ball and Hall of Fame. It’s perfect timing for a group of figure skaters in our area who still are inspired by her. The Rockford area formed a team this year and competed at the Illinois High School skating competition for the first time. Two of the 12 skaters came from Rockford Public Schools – Molly...
