RPS 205 art students learn: It’s all in the eyes

There on the website for How Stuff Works was the piece on why the eyes in paintings seem to follow you. I resorted to a Google search to figure out why some artwork in the Jan. 12 opening of the All-City Art Exhibit stuck with me. In particular, I kept feeling the sidelong stare of Laura Hintzman’s self-portrait. In 23 years of teaching, Caroline Kelly Wright has seen what the arts can do for children. “It breaks kids out of their shell,” she said, showing them the importance of communication and collaboration. RPS 205 student saves pigeons, spreads birding gospel

Jackie Kuroda’s interest in pigeons took off when the birds landed on her outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, eating out of her hand. The seventh grader at Maria Montessori School is a member of the Illinois Young Birders group.  This summer she addressed a symposium of the birding group in Lake County, attended by 60...

Delegation from Swedish city visits RPS 205

Four years ago, student Isaac Cotton-Hayes coached the visiting mayor of Lidkoping, Sweden, in an underwater robot race at Eisenhower Middle School. The robot helped illustrate manufacturing education at Eisenhower. The Lidkoping mayor — Kjell Hedvall — was back this week at the Rockford Public Schools. He reunited with Hayes, who’s now a senior at Guilford High School. Hayes gave the mayor a tour of the fabrications lab at Guilford and later confessed to a dream: That someday he would be able to go to Sweden to visit the mayor and the rest...
