Rear Admiral George J. Dufek

George J. Dufek was born in Rockford on February 10, 1903. He grew up in Rockford; while attending Rockford High School, and active in ROTC, he was nominated to Annapolis. He graduated from Annapolis in 1925. Dufek is best known for his polar expeditions. His first polar trip was in 1939, with Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd.
