Rock Valley College student leaders from CAB (Campus Activities Board) and SGA (Student Government Association) will host a celebration in honor of the RVC Women’s Basketball team’s national championship on Tuesday, March 20 from 2-3pm in the Student Center Atrium on RVC’s main campus (3301 North Mulford Rd).
The celebration will feature brief remarks from CAB and SGA leaders, RVC President Dr. Jack Becherer, as well as RVC head coach Misty Opat and some of the Golden Eagles players.
RVC won the college’s first ever NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) national title for women’s basketball after defeating Roxbury Community College, 82-64 in Saturday night’s title game.
The Golden Eagles survived a tight game in the tournament’s opening round on Thursday afternoon, edging Montgomery College- Rockville, 67-62 in overtime. RVC rolled on from there, toppling top-seeded Anoka Ramsey Community College on Friday night, 63-55, before cruising past Roxbury in the national title game.
RVC’s athletics program as a whole has now won nine NJCAA national titles- two for men’s tennis, two for women’s tennis, two for golf, two for volleyball, and one for women’s basketball. This is the second national title for a RVC team in the last six months. The RVC women’s tennis team won the national championship back in October.
